On May 25th, 1999, New Jersey’s first RCC demonstration was conducted at Giberson Plumbing and Excavation, in Shamong Township. Hosted by The New Jersey Concrete and Aggregates Association in conjunction with L & L Redi-Mix, Inc. of Vincentown, NJ. Industry representatives from NJ DOT, Del. DOT, FAA, PCPC,County and Local Engineers, Civil Engineering Firms, Asphalt Producers, Asphalt Contractors, Concrete Producers, Aggregate Producers and Industry Sales and Technical Representatives. Burt Roff of L & L Redi Mix and Frank Lennox of Hercules Cement Co., conducted an RCC overview and Q & A for the 50 plus attendees. No SealingThe in-place and initial cost of RCC is very competitive with asphalt pavements when measured on a per ton basis. Because of its ease of construction, the strength obtained and the economies 48; using concrete technology. RCC has great potential for the cement and concrete industry. It gives governmental construction, commercial projects and maintenance departments an economical and durable product they can use. It also gives the ready-mix producer and asphalt contractor another product they can offer their customers.

What is RCC?

Roller Compacted Concrete is a stiff, zero-slump concrete mixture that is mixed, placed, and roller compacted with the same commonly available equipment used for asphalt pavement construction. Because of the low water content used in the mix and resulting low: water-cement ratio, RCC typically has high strengths similar to, or even greater than, conventional concrete. RCC is placed without forms, finishing, surface texturing, and joint sawing and sealing. Due to these factors RCC is often more economical than a flexible pavement of equivalent design


RCC was developed primarily for dams and paving. While used effectively in both applications, their respective mix designs, constructions methods and finished products are different. The first applications of RCC for dams date back to the 1960s where it was used in new construction. By the 1980s, RCC had evolved to include work on existing installations. The first significant RCC dam in Canada was built at Lake Robertson, Quebec. Canada’s first RCC pavement was built in 1976 at a log sorting yard on Vancouver Island. More than 650,000 sq. yds. Of 7in thick, roller-compacted concrete pavement has been placed at the Saturn auto plant near Nashville, Tennessee. In Fort Hood Texas, an 18,000 sq. yd. Tank and tracked vehicle parking area. Port of Tacoma, Washington. Three freight handling areas, each having 35,000 to 50,000 sq. yds. of 12 in. RCC.


RCC’s main benefit is cost savings resulting from its method of production, construction and speed of paving operations. Also, RCC pavements do not require joints, reinforcing steel or formwork and require virtually no maintenance, resulting in further savings over conventional paving methods.
